Winter Lights 2020

The Old Sloop is participating in Winter Lights 2020, a project to decorate Cape Ann communities for the holidays. A map that shows all of the 150 businesses and organizations that are participating will be available soon.

There are three elements to our display:
  1. Paper bag luminaires will line the walk, as has been done at Christmas in the past.
  2. Six of the rounded green evergreen bushes - three around the stone with the historical tablet near School Street and three on the other side of the path around the church sign - will be lighted with small white LED Christmas tree lights.
  3. Two Christmas Trees will be erected on the lawn and illuminated with colored lights.

We need your help decorating the trees! Children of all ages (including adults) are welcome to participate. We would like you to make "ornaments" at home that would act as bird feeders. We hope kids will come independently with their families to put their ornaments on the trees so there won't be any large group gatherings. Some ideas for ornaments are:
  • Pinecone feeders covered with peanut butter and birdseed
  • Small suet balls or suet cakes in holiday shapes, or small mesh bags of suet
  • Strings of fruits such as apple, pear, or orange chunks, raisins, or cranberries
  • Dried sunflower heads or stalks of dried millet or other grain
  • Birdseed ornaments, either homemade or purchased
  • Strings of in-shell peanuts or broken walnuts
  • Small birdseed cakes
  • Whole apples, pears, or peaches, such as windfall fruits
  • Strings of plain air-popped popcorn or an unsweetened cereal such as regular Cheerios
You can find details and more ideas here. Night Tree is a wonderful children's book by Eve Bunting that describes decorating trees in this way.
